What's the difference between a precision bass and a jazz bass?

How do i get a Precision bass tone out of a jazz bass>>>?

  • I cant afford another bass and i'm getting into some punk rock, and i was wondering if i can get a similar p bass tone out of jazz bass, like amp settings.

  • Answer:

Switch your pickups out for Dimarzio Model J's (DP123). When backed off to the neck pickup it sounds more P than J IMHO. I use a set and my Jazz is now my favorite rock bass. Lots of mids and Lows, very tame top end which eliminates finger noise and clank. Follow the link below, these are wicked pickups.

Good answers already! Switch to more neck pickup and no bridge pickup, adjust to more bass on the tone controll.

I play a J bass. The biggest difference in the sound of a J bass is that it is brighter than the P bass. With a little experimenting with the tone controls on both the bass and the amp, you can make it sound pretty close to a P bass. I chose the J over the P as I like the neck better on the J and that you can make a J sound like a P by adjustments, but you can't make a P sound like a J. xx
