    If I understand correctly you are a trumpet player who has a 1/3--2/3 embouchure. If that's correct then that is the way you are supposed to play--I reference Arban and Clarke--1/3 of the mouthpiece on your upper lip and 2/3 on the bottom. Perhaps your don't quite have 1/3 on the upper lip--if that is the case you should move the mouthpiece up a bit. Try a 50/50 position, half on the top lip and half on the bottom--that will probably be more comfortable. It also sounds as if you began to put more pressure on your upper lip when you changed mouthpiece position--that would explain the lip swelling. So keeping the pressure even as you change is something you need to focus on. Don't be afraid to ask for specific instructions from your instructor and also take these problems to him/her.
