  • Today my band teacher said i needed new reeds since my reeds were worn out. She said I might need a 2.5 reed, but whats the difference. So here I am now deciding which reed I should ...show more

  • Answer:

I was a clarinet major and if I remember correctly the numbers is the thickness between the reeds. I don't know the specifics for saxes but it can't be that different. As you progress notes that are in the upper registers are harder to hit with a softer reed. The brand is up to you. I would suggest you get the new reeds ASAP so you can get at least two broken in before your concert. You might want to get some reed rushes as well. It's a way to sand down the reed a bit without using sandpaper. It doesn't take off as much right away. Hope that helps. Good luck on your concert.
