Jazz music's influence on modern music?

  • I'm writing a research paper for school about the Jazz age and how Jazz music has affected modern music. Could someone please give me a few examples of how it affected it? ...show more

  • Answer:

Jazz introduced a whole new way of thinking about harmony and melody. In some ways it bridged the gap between "serious" music, such as the Impressionist music of Debussy or Ravel, and popular music. For example, jazz musicians helped popularize the use of scales other than major and minor (pentatonic scales, various modes, octatonic scales, and so on) which were being used by classical composers and are relatively common in popular music today.

To understand Jazz, one would need to find it's springboard or predecessors. One predecessor is the "cakewalk" of the 1800 post civil war era. Try looking up the song "Whistlin' Rufus" It was a popular tune of it's era and style. Cakewalks gave way to the immediate beginnings of Jazz , Ragtime music. And of coarse one would have to think of Scott Joplin the king of rag and the 1st black American to hold a music contract in the U.S. This era was 1890's early 1900's. Then dixieland jazz so on and so forth. The jazz seen can be follow right down as it began seeping over into other genres and absorbing other influences as well.

What do you mean by "modern music"? There's plenty of modern jazz out there.
