What is the difference between contemporary jazz and smooth jazz?

Answer:
I disagree with soulmate. Contemporary jazz is a very broad term of all whats going on in jazz now- could be jazz with world music influencves, brad meldau or whatever. Mostly people mean jazz with sophisticated harmonies and so on. Smooth jazz is more a easy listening thing, and jazz musicians consider a lot of this music even not as jazz.

They're pretty much the same thing. Smooth jazz is actually a radio format rather than a style.
