There's a piece called "A Minor Excursion" by David Caffey. It's a minor-key 12-bar blues with an absolutely killer trombone section "solo" near the end - NO one else playing (the trombone section is basically "a cappella") for an entire chorus, takes a lot of practice to get the melodic line crisp and together, but well worth the effort. For the next chorus the trombones are joined by the trumpets in a kind of two-part jazz counterpoint, before everyone else slides back in. It's a very, very exposed moment, so you've really got to get it right and tight, but it's totally cool and impressive as all hell. Here's a youtube video of a school jazz band doing the piece. Looks like this director had the bari sax play along with the trombones on that part - this group probably wasn't really quite strong enough to pull it off, but it's a tough piece and they sure gave it a very good try!
