What is pentatonic scale?

Are pentatonic scales just scales with 5 scale degrees instead of 7 scale degrees?

  • Can you give me the pentatonic scales in scale degree notation? Can you describe the pentatonic blues scale for me in scale degree notation?

  • Answer:

Jay got it right. Now, develop some chops of your own with that. I will add that when playing the major scale mentioned above, you can drop the bass 1.5 steps [or intervals] from he root and you get the basic minor pentatonic scale without the accidentals. Tend to use flat 5ths and Major 7ths as passing tones, but I never hold any of the notes in a chord, unless the chord is a "chop". I play piano/keyboards.

Other answers

No. They're never written as five degrees, but rather as an ''incomplete'' seven-degree scales. That is, you would write a minor pentatonic as 1 3m 4 5 7m and a major pentatonic as 1 2M 3M 5 6M.
