How do you feel about pop music questions in the classical music category?

  • Whether pop music is good or bad is not the point. When a person posts a pop music question in this category, I interpret it to mean something like "You should broaden your ...show more

It depends on the poster. Before I make a judgment, I check out their Profile and read any info. posted. If their Q's & A's, Contacts and Fans are public, I browse thur a few. If they've not been a user for very long, one can assume they might have posted their question in the wrong category out of inexperience or just simply plain ignorance; and can therefore give them the benefit of a doubt, then diplomatically informing them of their error. Should I detect any degree of slovenness or careless disregard for the guidelines, I don't bother with responding; just "block" them - the little red circle that then appears attached, is a signal to me should I come across another question posted by them in the future, to not even bother clicking it on - they're not worthy of my attention, time and effort - nor anyone else's I would think. How do I look? It annoys me, almost as much as when they play jazz on the classical music station (The only such station in Australia.)

My resentment isn't toward the pop music itself, it is to the asker who is to lazy to categorize properly. It is also aimed toward those who constantly ask for transcriptions (both pop and classical) in "letter names"; generally followed on by a capitalized "it has to be FREE!!!!" and an lol or XD. I don't disregard all pop music as "garbage" and neither do I hold all classical music on a pedestal. I'm willing to give it a listen, but by the 200th time I heard "Bella's Lullaby" and "A River Flows In You" I was pretty sure I would never care for them. Quite possibly just as trite, I like Suzanne Cianni's "Velocity of Love" I like Vangelis' "Heaven and Hell part II", "Chariots of Fire" and "Hymne" (though that last one has worn thin); I like Seven Nations and Blackmores Night ... but I know enough not to post questions about them here ... just like I know not to ask questions about the Barber of Seville, the texture of an orchestral work, or the merits of a particular conductor in Rock and Pop. But there is also a gray area that needs addressing which can't be resolved by simply using the "other" category. What better category is there for asking questions about 20th - 21st century choral and orchestral works? Works like those by Chip Davis (Mannheim Steamroller) or John Rutter (Cambridge Singers). Part and parcel with those, however, we also get Trans Siberian Orchestra and Celtic Woman. ... Oh, and my neighbors break out the blue agave and play mariachi music loudly til all hours of the morning.

I agree with you, Larry. They should be beheaded

I think it's ignorance. Where I live, people call any type of music they don't understand "opera". ("Is that there opera you're listening to?" when there are no vocals whatsoever.) People think just because you have an Asian dude playing the piano, Yiruma must be classical. I can't for the life of me understand why people act like this Yiruma guy, or Richard Clayderman, are the be-all and end-all of music, with their I, IV, and V chords in simple keys, but you give them something like the Chopin Aeolian Harp etude, and they don't like it...

If even for practical reasons, it's better that different types of music are separated into individual categories. It's very annoying to try to find a question on classical music among so many others that are not or have nothing to do with classical music. At least this bit of order is really necessary.

It used to annoy me, but then I realised that in the scheme of things, it's really not such a huge deal.

Its annoying. I think they should research what we mean by "Classical Music" before posting a question about "Classic rock". LimLam: Do you have Foxtel? Ovation! And there's a classical music channel

I think alot of the questions that are about music but not classical are asked because many feel that a person who knows about classical music should be able to answer just about any music question. I certainly could not, (answer just about any question) but many of you "old timers" can. Its usually about sheet music, note questions, or some other "song" question. I would take it a compliment. Many of the questions are or seem to be asked by younger people and they simply feel that a "classical music nut person" is a "wise old owl". Kinda like asking Grandpa. He knows everything. Really no need to be bothered by it. If you see the question, can answer it, feel like answering it, then answer it. If not, why click on it?

Frankly, to me it's like death & taxes: part of life as we live it. I can't get hot under the collar about it in any shape or form. If it happens to be a Q of which I can see I could flip the answer the Q-er's way without going way out of my own way, I'll happily do so. If it looks very much a non-starter in this section, I'll amiably re-direct to a better section, if there is one I can see for it. And the rest simply rolls off the proverbial duck's back. Better things to do with my emotions... :-) All the best,
