  I'm not the greatest musician it the world (Hence the name Music Buff in Training) but I believe an excellent way to get better at composing music is by experimenting with the different styles music has to offer. Play some blues, play some classical, country, Church music, And play some jazz. by experimenting with more and more diverse elements of music it will open your eyes (and your mind) to more and more creative ways to combine the harmonys and melodies in music. Some of the best stuff I've ever written originated in a jam. Don't labor over the pen and parchment part of the music at first, just experiment until you find something that pleases YOUR ear.
