Does anybody actually "celebrate" Kwanzaa?

Why would anybody want to celebrate Kwanzaa?

  • Maulana Karenga seems like an awful human being.

  • Answer:

People celebrate Kwanzaa to honor African American culture and heritage, not Maulana Karenga alone.

Kwanzaa is a celebration that has its roots in the black nationalist movement of the 1960s and was created in 1966-67 as a means to help African Americans reconnect with their African cultural and historical heritage by meditating on and studying African traditions and the African philosophy of Nguzu Saba (the seven principles of African Heritage). It doesn't preclude someone from celebrating Christmas - a religious celebration - since Kwanzaa is celebrating a person's heritage, just as other ethnic groups do.
