How To Play The Blues?

I don't understand how to play Blues....?

    If you take the A minor pentatonics scale (notes in this scale: A, C, D, E, G) and add one note, you'll get the blues scale. In the case of A minor pentatonics, that blues note would be an E flat/D sharp. You can easily use that scale over a 12-bar blues patter in A minor. For example, these chords (each time a chord is written, it represents one measure of four beats): Am, Dm, Am, Am, Dm, Dm, Am, Am, Em, Dm, Am, Em Of course, you could switch those chords where Am would become A7, Dm becomes D7 and Em becomes E7...or where Am would be replaced with A13, while D is replaced by D9 and E by E9 (I prefer E7#9 for the last chord in 12-bar blues like this though). The blues has an inherent major/minor ambiguity. You can HAPPILY play the minor-sounding blues scale over major chords. However, you are not limited to that scale in the least - nor to any scale. Feel free to dabble with the major scale, the minor scale, the major and minor pentatonic scales, the blues scale, the mixolydian mode, the dorian mode, and any other variations you can think of. Don't play any ONE of these scales - mix and match them from phrase to phrase. trill your thirds from major to minor, both in melodic passages AND in the chord structure. The notes create their own tension which is kind of the point of blues music and improvising.

It is not really something you understand it is something you feel, in your heart and your fingers. You can go around listening to all the blues greats and never be great at the blues because you have to feel it. You can play chords and scales and learn that stuff but it isn't the blues without emotion and feeling.
