How To Play The Blues?

When you play blues in a certain key, how do you normally pepper your blues scale notes with non-scale notes?

    i'm a guitarist, first of all. I like to, like the above poster, use chromatic passing tones. I also use some notes from harmonic and natural minor scales. Often I'll takes these notes, and 'bend' the note into key. Say for instance, taking the D# from the Harmonic minor scale and bending up a semitone to the E, to resolve the tension created from the D#. Sometimes I take notes completely out of key, say A#, and bend it into key, to B.

Well, for blues, I don't usually try to use things outside of the blues scale because it sounds weird to me. But trying things out is always good! Say you have an E - A - B7 progression. If you wanted, you could use modes in it. E major (Ionian) for the E A lydian for the A B dominant (mixolydian) for the B7 Try it out, perhaps, and see what you like!
