How can I break into the Healthcare field?

Why is the VC funding in the field of healthcare and health systems so less?

  • Considering that the US healthcare system in particular is so expensive, and is in dire need of some change. Not only would more VC funding help in developing new technologies and making them cheaper and more accessible, but it'd also probably be greatly beneficial to the US economy. Prospects of a Moore's law equivalent in healthcare, resulting in drop in prices for certain machines and technologies, would also be a possibility. Given this background, why isn't there more funding by VCs in healthcare systems and technologies?

  • Answer:

I think there are specific areas in the healthcare system that are receiving a lot of VC attention - specifically digital health and analytics. We have seen a bunch of healthcare-specific startup accelerators and incubators including RockHealth, Propeller, Healthbox etc. and multiple conferences including Health 2.0 or the Health Datapalooza. So, yes, I would argue that the interest is there, and funding does happen. Also, VC funding may not be the only discernible means of attention too - many such could go with public/SBIR funding or just bootstrap in stealth mode till they're acquired by Big Pharma/Tech.
