Vision exercises for mypoia - working for me so far?

  • I have read a lot of criticism about vision exercises. After reading the positive reviews for this book - Improve Your Vision Without Glasses or Contact Lenses by Steven M. Beresford ...show more

  • Answer:

Your vision can be getting better with these exercises for a few reasons. First, your prescription may be too strong and you are "over corrected." This happens when you get a prescription that is stronger than you need. Your eyes can focus over the prescription and give you clear vision. With a prescription that is too strong, images look sharper and darker than with the correct strength prescription. Second, you may be experiencing blur adaptation. Vision isn't perfect but you've adapted to it. You are right about the size of the eye determining the refractive error. But, sometimes it's the strength of the lens inside the eye or the curvature of the cornea. Either way, these anatomical characteristics haven't been shown to change with exercises. The famous book about "Sight Without Glasses" by Bates and popularized by AldusHuxley was popular about 60 years ago. Huxley followed the techniques of the book that included the exercise called palming. His vision improved to such an extent that he threw away his glasses. What wasn't told was the follow-up to the story. Huxley was developing cataracts. Sometimes developing cataracts go through a stage where the vision improves and people can see without their glasses. Eventually, the cataracts worsened and Huxley needed cataract surgery. This part of the story never was told by Bates.

The most common answer given is that you are 'learning' how to test your visual acuity - that is, your vision isn't actually improving, you're just getting better at taking the test to determine your vision. If it is working for you, great; but studies have repeatedly failed to show any measureable, repeatable benefit. If you're seeing actual benefits outside of the vision test, then great. It seems to me that you shouldn't waste your time or money - at best, you change your prescription, but you're still going to need glasses. There's no physiological reason for your prescription to change. It's based on the length of your eye, which doesn't change; the thickness, shape, and refractive index of your cornea, which doesn't change; and the thickness, shape, and refractive index of your lens, which doesn't change. Anyway, don't worry about what number your prescription is. If your vision gets to 20/20 with glasses, you have perfect vision.
