Why does it feel good to rub your eyes when you're waking up or falling asleep?

When I was a kid, my parents always told me rubbing my eyes was bad for me. Of course, they never explained why. Why is it that when my eyes are tired, I have an urge to rub them?

Rubbing your eyes can scratch and damage the eye. It also causes wrinkles.But I agree It does feel good to rub my eyes when I'm sleepy. I usually rub them until there swollen. Lol
