I think at the end of the day, everybody is looking for a day off and to party. History is history. Right now, it's about time with your family and enjoying life. If we can have a Chinese New Year holiday, and get a day off, most people would probably jump on board.

Well, as long as they are not illegal immigrants, they have every right to celebrate an American Holiday. After they get naturalized, they are officially American, and therefore they can celebrate any of our Holidays. Even so, if they choose not to, they do not have to celebrate any of our Holidays. =] Viola

Interesting question I never thought of this. I am a Native American and many of my people celebrate 4th of July. I think we just do what others around us are doing without actually realizing the purpose and history behind the main concept.

Actually, the Emancipation Proclamation was a complete joke and didn't free anyone. Lincoln declared the slaves free in the Confederate States where he had no authority to enforce it while leaving slavery intact in the border States where he had the authority to enforce Emancipation. Blacks were better off when segregated. They had their own thriving communities, businesses, etc. When desegregated, the successful blacks moved near the whites leaving the black communities to crumble into ghettos. Also never forget that it was black Africans that made slaves out of their brothers and sold them to the highest bidders around the world. There is STILL slavery there!Only 6% came to America where the mildest form was practiced. All in all, black Americans have had it a whole lot better than their brothers who stayed in Africa or were shipped elsewhere. Be thankful for that!

I said, SON!

it's just an excuse to have a party! :)
