  • Answer:

stacy, i practice in corporate/commercial. the big umbrella is yes, its anything to do with law and business. in corporate - you are dealing with law and companies/corporations. (legal entity) in commercial - its basically everything that is left over - (businesses not registered as legal entity). we deal with things like sales, purchases, financing, securities, franchising, IP and licensing, restructuring, portfolios, mergers and acquisitions, takeovers, employment issues, and basically anytime the client requires some sort of legal advice with regards to how their business is run, we give it. Lawyers are lawyers are lawyers - in my country (canada) all lawyers are to "know" most areas of law generally and we are qualified to practice both as solicitors (mainly business) and barristers (litigators/court). however, after we are called, most lawyers choose to specialize in one area and limit themselves to say, a commercial lawyer, a labour lawyer, a criminal lawyer, an insurance defence lawyer etc. so, a commercial lawyer is different from any other type of lawyer, but not better or worse, just specializing in a specific area. As for what it takes: I did a double undegrad, then went to law school - total of 8 years. I articled 1 year, completed my licensing requirements, and have been practicing for 2 years.

Warning! Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!! This is not a good field to invest time and/or money into. This is a SHRINKING vocational field. Many reasons. THE main reason?......We simply have WAY TOO MANY Legal Professionals - we have a GLUT!! ("Legal Professionals" includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc) Even IF you finish law school, you won't be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work "down" as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of THEIR bills paid. And the competition is FIERCE!! Now... the law schools know this, but they won't tell you the truth >that the job market/economy is SATURATED with WAY TOO MANY Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale. AND the schools continue to recruit and churn out even MORE Lawyers.............(The root of the problem is that we have way too many law schools.) If you don't believe me, then just do a SEARCH here on Yahoo Answers to see what other posters are saying about the current status of the field of Law. If you want a JOB when you are done with your studies, consider and look into the field of >HEALTHCARE! <THIS is where the jobs are! and scholarships! Good luck.
