  • Answer:

You first need a 4 year college degree. It can be in anything. NO, prelaw courses do not help. You need to get good grades so pick something you enjoy. If you intend to open your own law practice take business courses. Next you take the LSAT test. You need to score high on this, so you may want to take a prep course. Your LSAT score, and your college grades, are included on your application to a law school. Good grades and high LSAT may get you some financial assistance. You suffer through law school. 3 years for the day division and 4 years for the evening division. I would like to say something good about law school, but the only good thing is that it qualifies a person to be a lawyer. Law school is like years of being hazed by some very nasty people. You have to want to be a lawyer bad, to put up with it. In law school the vast majority of courses are required or are courses that you want to take because they are tested on the bar exam. You will take real estate law classes -- required, BUT the classes will NOT train you to do a real estate closing. Law school classes are theory based, not how to's. You will learn the how to's by working at a firm who does that work or by taking a seminar after you are out of law school. In most big cities the Real Estate Title companies hold annual seminars that teach how to do a real estate closing. After you graduate law school, you will take the Bar Exam. This is a 2-day test on law in general and your state's laws. You should take a prep course for this. If you pass you get sworn in as an attorney, if not you re-take the test. You may want to look at www.abanet.org that is the ABA website. ABA does have info on how to be an attorney. Good luck.
