Does France have something similar to the Silicon Valley? Is there anything like this in the rest of Europe?

Answer:
Sophia Antipolis is a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_park northwest of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibes and southwest of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nice, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France. Much of the park falls within the commune of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valbonne. Created in 1970-1984, it houses primarily companies in the fields of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computing, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronics, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharmacology and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biotechnology. Several institutions of higher learning are also located here, along with the European headquarters of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wide_Web_Consortium. In the early years, one of the main challenges of Sophia Antipolis was to relate people and to create a sense of community. The "Human Factor" is what was to distinguish the Science and Technology Park in the world as a landmark of science, invention, innovation and research. It was to focus on building an international environment, creating an international community. This means taking into account and improving tenant interaction, networking and cross fertilization of ideas. The concept was that bringing together people from different intellectual horizons and "making" them meet, would bring added value and generate innovation. Many professional clubs were thus launched: The http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sophia_business_angels_club&action=edit&redlink=1, the http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sophia_Nordic_link&action=edit&redlink=1, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Art_Sophia&action=edit&redlink=1,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecom_Valley are just a few. Sophia Antipolis is named after http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sophie_Glikman-Toumarkine&action=edit&redlink=1, the wife of French Senator http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pierre_Laffitte_(senator)&action=edit&redlink=1, founder of the park, and incidentally, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophia_(wisdom), the Greek word for wisdom, and Antipolis, the ancient Greek name of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibes. Many of the roads within the technology park have Greek names. There is a giant sculptured Greek urn as a centre-piece on one of the roundabouts. So it is small scale, but it's been around for a while and has produced some successes. From: wikipedia In the Netherlands, in the last 15 years, Eindhoven has taken the lead in this field. Around "brain port" it now attracts 40% of all R & D spend in the Netherlands. So I don't agree entirely with here. The local government was very much in the driving seat in creating this. Together with the Port of Rotterdam and Schiphol Airport, the Eindhoven region is one of the three mainports in the Netherlands. The city is more than justified in calling itself âBrainport'. The region accounts for around 40 per cent of R&D investments in the Netherlands. More information? Visit http://www.brainport.nl/ (choose English).

No. Governments do try all the time In the UK there is Silicon Glen and Silicon Fen but these are generally failures of state planning. In the UK there are lots of startups round Old Street but there is nothing in Europe even close to what Silicon Valley is. This is due to a variety of historical reasons, lack of successes, lack of capital and investors and the secret sauce don't taste good

1. Canary Wharf, London 2. My street, I mean the people there are not proper stupid and there have been no crimes for the last decade as far as I know.

The first answer is a good one, Sophia Antipolis on the Cote d'Azur, though the results have been very uneven. The French government has encouraged other locales, like Bordeaux, and HP is in a high tech industrial park in Grenoble. Cambridge in the UK seems to have the best record, ARM, biotech, and I think two startup incubators.
