Would it be stupid to go to law school and not practice law?

Do you have to go to law school to practice law?

  • Answer:

There are a few jurisdictions in the US that let you sit for the bar without a degree from an ABA accredited law school. However, they're not the norm. Additionally, you'll have to meet a large number of requirements before sitting (you can't just stroll in on bar day, bathrobe and bunny slippers on, and take the exam) that are usually as onerous as law school. In short, if you want to practice law, you're gonna have to go to law school. On top of the difficulties mentioned above, not many places would hire someone who didn't go to school for it (at least, I don't think they would). Good luck!

I was researching this a few months ago. I think all states allow it. But hardly anyone does it. I'm in California & I think there are something like 16 people in the CA bar who didn't go to law school.
