  Criminal Defense Attorneys could work in private practice paid by the client and/or a defense attorney assigned, and paid, by the court as American law guarantees legal representation for people charged with a crime. In America, lawyers just out of school must pass their state bar exam and earn their license to practice. They aren't going to earn much as new attorneys and will have huge workloads. They're designed to allow the lawyer to continue their learning, on the job, until they are ready to set foot in a courtroom. You may not make much money, in either country, to start but you could end up earning some serious income in either nation down the road. My advice would be to become a licensed attorney in both the United States and Canada. There may be a time when you can use that to help your career, especially if you practice near the border.
