What should I do to become a paralegal?

What degrees/certificates should I get to become a successful paralegal?

  • I want to make the most money for a paralegal, so I was wondering what I need in order to do that.

  • Answer:

I graduated 2 years ago with a B.A. in English, and it has helped me tremendously as a paralegal. I have found that a the ABA certificate really isn't necessary where I live (SC), but I have taken some paralegal courses for my own benefit. I would say a college degree is a given for this career. One must be highly organized, able to prioritize (it's harder than it sounds, trust me!), use rationale and understand and utilize ethics. Although, not all the paralegals I have worked with went to college, so it's really up to what the firm/attorney requires. Get the most education you can though, it certainly can't hurt!

Get a four year degree in political science with a law emphasis and then go to a post graduate paralegal program. That will get you into big, downtown law firms in the Dallas area. Well, that and an excellent GPA. Most big law firms will not even look at you if you don't have a bachelor's degree.

I am starting school in the Fall-a paralegal certificate course. I have a BA already, which was required to enroll in the course. I have been looking at ads for paralegal jobs and it really varies. Many employers seem to be asking for a BA (in any area) and the certificate from an ABA-approved program (that is important from what I have read and heard and was how I chose my school). Some want a certificate only and there are a lot who want experience. Actually, ALL of the ads I have seen want experience. That is why I just accepted a job in a law office as an entry-level assistant-to get the experience. The larger firms seem to be paying more and the more experience, the more money. Whatever you do, do NOT take an online course for paralegal. Really try to find an ABA-approved school, because that is what I keep seeing. Check out your local community colleges. The one I am attending offers an Associates where you get the certificate and a certificate where you have to have the BA.

I just graduated with an associates degree in Paralegal Studies and work for an attorney who practices primarily in property and real estate law. Property law was my worst class ever, but amazingly, i love my job! Certificates in Paralegal studies dont get you too far in the area i live, and there are very few schools that offer Bachelors Degrees in Paralegal here. I'm considering getting a Bachelors in General studies with a concentration in Paralegal Studies. Obviously, Bachlors Degrees are going to make you more $$.Good Luck to you in your endeavors
