What is the history of Easter?

What was the year,in all recorded history, the celebration of Easter?

  • Before Christ,Easter had other meaning,Easter was not the celebration of the resurrection of Christ. So when did the first Easter appeared in al recorded history? Thanks!

  • Answer:

Before Christ, there was no Easter. Easter is the celebration of his resurrection and, despite the garbage you might read on the net, that is what it always has been. Before the celebration reached the Anglo-Saxons in around 600 AD, it was called Pascha (in Latin) which means Passover - it was the Christian Passover. That name and the date were originally derived from the Jewish Passover (Pesach in Hebrew). Its name in most languages is still based on that - Paques in French, for example. The word Easter is probably from the Anglo-Saxon word for the month in which it is usually celebrated It is first recorded around 600 AD. The celebration of the Resurrection goes back to before 200 AD.
