    A really good excuse???? Why would you lie?!?!?! You tell them you are leaving to return to school and would love to be able to come back next summer. You also tell them NOW and give them notice. Why on earth would you make something up!?!?!?!?!

The best way is just to tell him straight up. "I have a great opportunity to go back to school on a pell grant, & I cannot afford to pass it up." Maybe he will offer you a part me job so you can stretch you r money.

You do not make up a fake excuse to quit your job. Voluntarily quitting your job is a choice you are making. The job opening will not be waiting for you next summer. Giving your boss one week of notice is not good. You are going to be leaving him short staffed and most likely irritated with you. You have been there less than 2 months so there is no reason to expect that you will work there again in the future.

Oh definitely tell the truth and explain that you are leaving to further your education, and that a grant has become available that you must take advantage of. Really, I can't think of a manager that would think that was a bad excuse. And explain that you would love to come back as a temporary employee on breaks.
