If you don't go to chef school you are NOT a chef. If you cook something well and do NOT go to chef school you are a cook. Most people in America are cooks. If you do go to chef school I recommend the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) or a comparable school. I recommend you get a specialty like pastry chef or specialize in a certain style of cooking. Chefs have indeed been glamorized as a profession in recent years. Not everyone who goes to chef school gets a great job right out of school even though everyone eats.

you cook something, make sure people enjoy your cooking, then you sell it by opening restaurant, now you are a chef. you don't need college in order to being a chef. many don't.
