What does it take to become a chef?

What classes should a sophmore take to become a chef or something in the culinary field?

  • What classes/electives in california high school should someone take to become a chef ? What other careers are there in the culinary field?

  • Answer:

As a high school student, you're probably better off just getting a job at a restaurant or fast food place. Caterers would teach you a lot about food prep, too. It does count as cooking experience. Then, when you graduate, you can look into culinary curriculums at a local community college. And, eventually, you may go to culinary school. But, one problem is that the job market is flooded with entry level prep cooks looking to eventually become a chef. So, the work is hard, the hours are long, and the pay isn't very good. And, unless you got some fantastic break in life, it may be a long time for you to become an actual chef, if you ever get there.

Chefs are not finding jobs. Just read the articles, watch the news, read the statistics. Currently there is only 1 job opening for every 40 graduates. Employers simply do not have this much demand ! These schools can cost $80,000. I would be extremely disappointed if anyone was selfish enough to pay this amount and not do research to see if there is even one job opening out there.
