How can I make a timeline look good aesthetically?

For avid readers: Would you be interested in a book timeline? Yes or no, and how much would you pay?

  • Hi, I am currently working on an idea (which I hope is not a mistake for sharing it with the community). It is a very cool looking poster that shares a 1,2 or 5 year timeline of all the books you have read. It can be either with covers or just the names of them on a timeline. It can either be added manually for past reads or you can scan ISBNs as you read them in the future. --- I feel that there are more and more readers these days who are reading ebooks, and so, do not have the luxury of having a library to show off all of the titles that they have read. I feel that this could make a great talking point when framed and shared. Also, it is a tool to look back on your literary life, and remember your favorite stories. --- I thought I would throw this idea out there and ask, would you buy something like this and how much would you pay?

  • Answer:

Yes. And I know just who I would buy it for. I recently typed up the handwritten list of books that my dad has read since 1978.  Thousands.  It was my birthday gift to him.   He was absolutely mental seeing it all in Excel. I think he might actually die if he had a poster.  Die a happy man.  Would have to go back more than 5 years though. My mother on the other hand.. might just kill me if I gave him yet another monument to his books.  Because he still owns ALL the books.  Thousands.

I wouldn't buy a poster for myself (but, caveat, I don't buy any posters for myself). I prefer seeing my books lined up in bookshelves (alphabetized and categorized into hard covers and soft covers). I might, however, buy one for a friend (if he/she actually hangs posters). Price? Most posters are competitive around $10.00. If the paper was extra special, though, I might splurge for a more expensive one.

Thanks for the A2A. No, I wouldn't buy such a poster, for the simple reason that most books I've read aren't particularly memorable. There's no method to my reading, as I choose books (from a library or bookstore) for a wide variety of reasons and interests. The books I really like go on a certain shelf, the rest I donate to the library so they can be sold at their book sales. If I don't care for a book, I don't bother finishing it, which is another reason I wouldn't buy the timeline/ poster.

I actually had a blog for a while that I recorded and reviewed every book I read over about 5 years or so. It was handy for reference and I still refer to it sometimes. Unfortunately, I didn't log in for a long time and completely forgot the email it was attached to and the password, so no more updating. :(  If anyone is interested:  http://angiemademedoit.blogspot.com/   I'm not sure if I would buy a poster though. I may go back to doing it the old fashioned way, in a tiny Moleskin notebook.

Since I was asked to answer: I wouldn't (unless it was free), but I can see why someone would. First of all, I am not a voracious reader. I read slowly, with great care. I can imagine that someone who reads more than a hundred books a year might have trouble keeping track of them all. I don't. Second, I already keep a list of books I've read, and I don't particularly care whether others see it. I think a service like this could make a good talking point, but I find it difficult to talk about books because I have specialized tastes that few share. Besides, I don't often like to linger on a book when I finish. I give them away, more often than not. (Some books just return to my thoughts naturally, and that can't be helped.) The kinds of people you should target are people for whom books are not just important, but central. This is probably the core demographic for sites like Goodreads.

I would not pay for a timeline, though I think it could be a cool idea for some people One reason why it is not for me is that some of the books I have read I may not have enjoyed too much - a foible of mine is that if I start a book I have to read it however much I hate it. Gravities Rainbow took two years at an average of a page a day - purgatory I already log my books on Goodreads and it has a function that shows you the covers of books read in a particular year

A2A. Wouldn't probably buy one. If I really wanted such a poster, I'd probably create one myself. But I think there would be a small segment of people who'd love to buy this - though more as a gift than as a personal record of books they have read (depends on the price of course).

In my case, I believe this would work better as a gift for someone else than as an item for myself. I could be interested in a poster with portraits of my favorite authors, though. If you have a prototype of your idea and believe it's appropriate, then share it with us. You'll probably get more insightful comments that way.

Like a lot of other people said, I would probably buy it for someone else as a gift. As for the amount I pay, it would depend on how good the poster is :) How do you propose to find out the books people read? Because if they are anything like me, they have probably tried to make a timeline themselves and failed miserably. It is a PAIN to remember and/or chronicle all the books someone has read in case of your target audience. Otherwise, this is definitely an intriguing idea.
