Answer:
We are regularly hiring them in my area. A good part of the reason is because MAs tend to be twenty something females. Twenty something females tend to want to start families, so turnover happens. We also have the same problem that the rest of the country is having - a lack of good workers. A qualified experienced MA who can actually work reliably and responsibly is gold and a good doc knows it. New MAs who can't tie their own shoes without a diagram or app simply don't last in good offices. They all end up fighting for Nursing Home and grunt work jobs. The job pool vs. number of grads doesn't bode well for new grads - our largest local hospital and clinic only have 7 job listings combined - but the jobs are out there, where I am. Just know *your* market before you commit to anything.

In my town there are very few jobs for MAs. Especially for new grads. Most people feel like they wasted their time and money and instead, go back for another profession like nursing or radiology or respiratory therapy. There are simply too many schools (for-profit) who are cranking out MAs like an assembly line and many job markets are saturated. Besides, many employers prefer state-licensed employees like LPNs and RNs.

I think it really depends on your geographic location. Where I reside, there are not a lot of job ads for medical assistants. And the jobs I see for medical assistants will also say LPN......so MA's are competing for those jobs with licensed nurses. A good way to determine whether there is a job market for MA's where you reside is by doing some online job searches. Indeed is a good one http://www.indeed.com One thing to keep in mind is to watch out for MA programs that are longer than LPN school. It would not be fiscally feasible in my opinion to spend more time in school than it would take to become a licensed nurse. MA's are not considered a licensed health care practitioner, which is why their salaries are significantly less than licensed nurses. I remember one time getting a call at work from a MA who was upset that she couldn't administer medications in a nursing home. She explained how her training was a 2 year program and she felt she was qualified. I mentioned to her that unfortunately some schools are "over selling" MA programs, and students don't realize that they must work in a setting where there is a physician........because the MA is working under the physician's license. She was not aware that there was no state "license" for MA's and she solely went off of what the private school was telling her. For the price she spent on her MA, she could have gotten her Associates degree in Nursing to become an RN, and still probably money left over to take a semester towards her BSN. I felt pretty bad for her.....she got ripped off.

Hi, It all depends on where you live. In some states MA's are in high demand. This will help you to get a good picture of what a MA does and what the job expectings are. http://ajbma.com/medical-assistant-much-respect/ Good luck in your choice!
