To do any job in nursing you're going to have a solid foundation in patient care and assessment skills. You can't move into jobs like informatics or insurance claims review or other non-patient care roles without having that direct care experience and an understanding of how nurses work, document their work, the flow of work, etc. Informatics is a specialty designed to gather and process data in nursing. If you don't know what nurses do and have a great understanding of that role, you won't be effective in informatics. And usually to work in informatics you need a Masters degree in nursing. Most MSN programs will not accept BSN RNs who have zero patient care experience.
