Should I become medical assistant or practical nurse?

I'm wondering if I should become a medical assistant then go back to become a registered nurse?

  • I thought if I became a medical assistant I would get my foot in the door then go back and get my RN degree. Not sure what to do?

  • Answer:

Absolutely do not waste your time with becoming an MA first. You will spend a bunch of money to a for-profit school and be left with job skills that mean very little, and will only have limited job opportunities. I can't tell you how many people come on these forums talking about how they cannot find an MA job. If nursing is your goal, go for it and don't waste time. Become a CNA or LPN first if you want to get your feet wet in basic patient care - but even these jobs are not really represenative of the work you do later as an RN. Being an RN is a unique profession that does incorporate some of the skills that CNAs and LPNs use, but its far more complex than that. Good luck whatever route you choose, but seriously consider going straight for the RN - it is absolutely unneccessary to go any other route. Many RNs had no previous experience of any kind in health care before becoming nurses and they do just fine.

I would say that if your ultimate goal is to be an RN, try to do it as directly as possible. If you can afford to, go straight to the RN. You can get an associate's degree in two to three years. I would disagree w/ the prior poster, though. Most medical practices do not want to pay for an RN. In most doctors' offices, the person referred to as a "nurse" is really an MA.
