What exactly does a Medical Assistant do?

What exactly is a Medical Assistant?

  • what exactly do they do? and is common for male's to be Medical Assistants or are like all the Medical Assistants females? :o

  • Answer:

A Medical Assistant is trained to work in a physician's office or clinic and perform a variety of tasks in that setting; whether clinical (the back office) or administrative (the front office). Most MAs do work in the back office and do things such as bring patients back from the waiting room, get weight and vital signs, obtain medical history and reason for visit, along with assisting the practitioner when needed with things like exams and procedures. They also perform EKGs, draw blood, and give injections (such as vaccines). While you wouldn't be hired in an OB/GYN office and if working in other practices, you wouldn't be assisting with the exam of a female, you still can work in the field. Many urgent care centers, urology practices, and orthopedic offices have male MAs. Here's a link to the AAMA: http://www.aama-ntl.org/

A medical assistant can perform quite a few roles. They can be in charge of office procedures such as drawing blood, weighing and doing vitals for a patient. They can also be responsible for running a small medical office. In some buildings the medical assistant is responsible for doing EKG's and verifying insurances.
