How do I become a Mental Health Nurse?

I want to become a psychiatric/mental health nurse?

  • I'm going to go to college to become an RN... is there any additional education needed?

  • Answer:

The other answers are incorrect - if you live in the US you can work in mental health with the RN license alone, with a minimum of an Assoc. Degree in Nursing. There is a psychiatric nursing component included in your nursing program. The rest of your training is offered by your employer when you are hired, just like any other specialty. You can go on to obtain a master's degree to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (note: in 2015 this will change to be a Doctorate of Nursing Practice rather than just the Master's) to become more highly specialized, but it's not necessary. You can work in any psych facility with only an RN license.
