What is the difference between a Nurse Anesthetist and an Anesthesiologist?

Anesthesiologist or Nurse Anesthetist? Which is the best job?

  • and if i am a nurse anesthetist can i return to school and become an anethesiologist? im about to graduate high school and thinking about what i would like to do with my life.

  • Answer:

In my area, we don't hire CRNAs, so the degree would be pretty worthless unless you can create a market for it. Other areas do use them, so you'll have to do your research well. I guess you could get your CRNA creds and then go back to undergrad, then med school, and then do a residency, but it wouldn't be the smartest career path. Anesthesiologists usually make at least double what a CRNA will make, so only you can decide which one is more right for you.

Ultimately you need to make a decision about your future. Nursing school is a 2 year program. From there you can start working and making good money. You can continue on to get your BSN and then Master's Degree. To be a doctor you would have to do your 4 year bachelor degree, med school, residency, specialty. Either choice is a good one. In my opinion, CRNA seems like the better choice. Good luck!

You can only become an anesthesiologist by going to medical school for an MD. A nurse anesthetist needs one to two years of additional training after she gets her graduate RN so about 6 years in all. Both are called on to work at all hours of the day and night, the work is hard as you are on your feet for hours and the pay is not what it once was.
