What's the difference between an MA and a dental assistant?

Nurse and medical assistant whats the difference classes ?

  • Is there much different between the classes a nurse takes and a medical assistant ( Two year degrees)

  • Answer:

MAs do not learn anything about actual floor nursing care, nor can they do IVs so they have no training there, or with other procedures they can not perform (urinary catheterizations for one). They only spend half their program learning medical things (so their depth is much less than RNs) the other half is front office (which RNs have really nothing in their training for this). MAs focus on helping the doc in the OFFICE (front & back) while RNs learn most of that and hospital patient care; so the focus is different and more extensive for RNs in most areas, although the MA learns more office type procedures. MAs are medical (doctor) assistants, not really nurses & their training, while overlaps on some issues, generally reflects this.

Just a word to the wise that there aren't supposed to be too many jobs for the medical assistant (or medical biller or coder) despite what the private $$ schools proclaim :) For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'registered nurses', 'licensed practical nurses', 'medical assistants' or such.
