Unfortunately, you can't skip anything just because you are a CNA. The two are totally different scopes of practice. RN's have a completely different approach. You will still be required to achieve atleast an associates degree at a college/University AND get a Nursing Diploma. To be an RN, you should consider that it may take a year to complete most of the prerequisites, and if you have to be on a waiting list consider that time. Once you are accepted into the Nursing School, it could take anywhere from 4-6 semesters if you go full time. So assume that pursuing RN license will take ATLEAST 2-4 years. And yes I am just talking about an associates degree. There is also alot of red tape before you can start - you need background checks, CPR training, taking the NET test, must have a certain GPA, must have graduated high school in the top half of your class, etc. The benefits of being a CNA before pursuing RN school are: -you will get experience -you will see if you really like nursing or not -you will have a job in the related field while training to be an RN -you will already be CPR certified RN school requires LOTS of prerequisites, and some schools require that you complete most or all of the prerequisites before you can even apply and be considered to be accepted. So working as a CNA while you get these courses completed sounds like a great idea. Also, RN schools have 1-3 year waiting lists. So atleast you will have a job while you sit around and wait. Do you know the local community colleges in your area? Go onto their websites now and start searching the the RN career programs. It may be listed as a transfer course. They will have lots of info about what nursing schools they are partnered with, what courses you will need, and entrance requirements. Once you have the name of the nursing school, you can then go to google and find their website. They will have MORE detailed info about the Nursing aspect and what that particular school requires/how much it costs/entrance requirements/etc. Good luck! I wish you the best. I am also pursuing nursing and it's a great, promising field for anyone who takes it seriously and does it for the right reasons.
