How do I become a Mental Health Nurse?

Qualifications to become mental health nurse?

  • I am interested in becoming a mental health nurse or even a therapist but how do i start. I am 24 and have no idea where to look or what qulaifications to get. Please help

I am assuming you have no health care qualifications??? Do you have any GCSE's at all? Having a C pass or above in English, Maths and a science would be essential. I would suggest phoning a few nursing university's to find out the admission criteria that is required for you to train as an RMN. Bournemouth and Southampton in the UK would be a good start. Having an NVQ 3 in care would be good or maybe a diploma in health and social care. I am an RN with over 18 years experience and thr training has changed vastly since i did mine in 87.

It would help if you told us what country you are in. In the UK you need A levels or equivalent and apply to your chosen universities.

I guess your first step would be to complete nursing school (RN). I am a nursing student(ADN-RN) right now in my final YEAH!! One of my rotations included psych nursing which I really enjoyed. We did our clinicals at Eastern State hospital which is the countries oldest mental health facility still running. They encourage new grads to apply for employment with them, so I guess the actual training is OJT. Check out their website which I've listed below, even if you don't live in the VA area, it's informative.

In Canada, such nurses would typically be what's called Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN). This is typically a 3 year program. Sometimes the program is basically part of a 4 year RN BScN degree, but you exit the program in Year 3 with a couple of additional courses prior to that. That said, you can also be an RN with specialized additional training in the area. RPNs typically work in psychiatric facilities, nursing homes (with dementia clients), mental health clinics, etc. Some work in hospitals, but hospitals typically post jobs for RNs. In other countries, the RN model with additional training may only apply. You can also look into counselling diploma (2 year) programs, or social work programs. Psychology is also a related field. Mental Health nurses typically will deal with mentally ill clients (i.e. Manic Depressive, Schizophrenia, etc.), whereas a therapist may help those experiencing troubles in life without a clinical mental illness diagnosis.
