If charged as a misdemeanor (it can be charged as an infraction) the maximum punishment is 6 months in jail, though it is usually handled with a fine of several hundred dollars. If you get licensed before you go to court, you MIGHT be able to get the charge dismissed or the fine reduced, though that would be entirely within the discretion of the judge. If you are charged with a misdemeanor, you will be entitled to appointed counsel if you cannot afford to pay a lawyer, and you should be represented.
