    Switch you undergraduate major to electrical engineering. Electrical engineers make more than Physics, and they have more jobs. Then get your masters degree in physics. These are the guys who run fermi labs, national ignition facility. High energy physics is all about instrumentation, you are really pushing the envelope of what can be measured. My boss at my intern job had a PHD in Geology and a BSEE degree. Several of my physics professors had BSEE degree and went on to get a PHD in physics.
