How do I start my catering company?

  • Answer:

Honestly, if you would need government support to run this 'nonprofit' it doesn't make any sense to do this. Wouldn't the charities be better served if they got the money directly? What you are proposing is taking government money to run a business that would donate it's 'profits' to charity. That's not how it works. What you are proposing does not qualify as a nonprofit organization. You can start a 'for profit' catering business with loans and investors, and then you are free to donate what ever percent of your profits you want to the charity of your choice. This way they get the benefit of your generosity and you don't funnel government support away from the people who actually need it in order to finance your catering career.

Here is a link to the IRS website that explains the requirements for 501(c)3 organizations: http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/%E2%80%A6 I'm not sure that your plan to start a non-profit catering company will qualify as a non-profit. Simply giving proceeds to charitable organizations does not make your company a non-profit, it just means you are generous with your profits. Hope this helps. Good luck.
