Is private Job better then Government Job?

In this economy is it better to take a job with the state government or work for the private sector?

  Better to take a civil service test, hope to score high enough to be eligible, if there are openings, be called for an interview, pass the interview, plus pass Probation (depending on each state, some Probations can be 3 months - 1 yr). Once you pass Probation, you're considered Certified (aka "Permanent"). Again, depending on your state, you can take Promo(tional) tests either within, or outside of your job title, if you're qualified, i.e. NYS Judicial tests normally are given every four years for Court Officer. Eligible lists depend on the following: your rank/place, and whether or not there are actual openings that determine how fast/slow a list moves. However with some states facing, or having budgetary problems, and/or in danger of being laid off, usually it's last in, first out if you're Appointed (didn't take a test); if you're Certified and there are layoffs, depending on senority you could be bumped either down or out (bumped down means you revert to your lower title=huge salary cut; bumped out means you're out the door-and there's nothing the union could do about either situations, This just happened a few months ago within the NYS Judicial sector. Personally I'd take my changes and go with state government, if job security's your aim, plus opportunities to take promo tests. Good luck
