In sales jobs, does "commission-based-pay" basically mean you're working for free?

it's all about how you work. for every sale you make you get paid. you have to be a good sales person. if you're not, i suggest you don't do it.

You can only make a decent amount if you are a good salesperson. Find out what their commission structure is, then figure out how much you would have to sell in order to make a decent living, and if those numbers are feasible. If you are getting a 5% commission and need $3000/month before taxes to pay your mortgage, car payments, insurance, etc, then you'll need to sell $600,000 worth of whatever they are selling every month. What is the company's average transaction size? If it's $1000, can you sell to 60 different people or clients every month? How can you support yourself if you don't make those targets? Honestly, in this economy unless you are 100% convinced there is a market for what they are selling and very few people selling the same thing, I would rather go for a job with a higher base salary and lower commission But it really depends what they are selling and how many other salespeople they have in your area

Theres a law its called national minimal wage, Not all companies stand by it how ever all companies that employ someone even if its commission based. they have to pay that minimal wage regardless. But when it come's tot he job centre's is your word against theres if you sign a contract on commission based. You wouldn't get me thought the door on commission based or zero hour contract ever. if they want workers then they should pay for them no free labour and no money making scams for companies . this is labour fault for letting them get away with the systems and time for a change in the law is due.
