What qualities and qualifications do you need to become a midwife?

  • can anyone go into midwifery?evenj if they dont have no nursing background or arent very bright!!!

  • Answer:

This has been taken from the Royal College of Midwives website - link below. Do visit the site, as it has more information than there's room for here, plus relevant addresses, etc. Entry is quite difficult, but if it's what you really want to do, don't give up trying to get those qualifications to gain entry into training. Good luck. (I'm assuming you're in the UK). 'You can enter the midwifery profession directly by undertaking a course leading to a midwifery qualification. Midwifery courses are provided by a number of universities. You can access the courses at diploma level or degree level. Diploma Route The minimum entry qualifications for a diploma course is usually GCSE (or equivalent) A – C grades in at least five subjects, which include english, maths and one science subject. A number of other alternative qualifications are accepted to enter the profession; these include: Double award Vocational A level NVQ level 3 BTEC National Access to Higher Education course Admission to the diploma route is made through the Nursing and Midwifery Admissions Service, and students are paid a non – means tested bursary during their course. You receive a Diploma and a Registered Midwife qualification. Degree Route The minimum requirement for degree courses is two A levels. Science is one of the preferred subjects. Application to the degree route is through UCAS. You will gain a degree and Registered Midwife qualification. Entry is very competitive, and many students have higher than minimum requirements; each university has its own specific criteria, so it is best to check with the individual institution.'

to train to become a midwife you must be at least 17 and a half. Apply to the NMAS (nursing and midwifery admissions service) and go from there. Apply to work and train at your local hospital.
