Why is The Simpsons considered the longest running cartoon show when the Japanese "Detective Conan" is longer?

The Simpsons is the longest running 1/2 hour, primetime, once a week, American, "sitcom" at 18 seasons and over 400 episodes. The are hundreds of other shows, (soap operas, talk shows, games shows, etc.), some of which are on 5 times a week that have recorded WAY more episodes. The UK's "Coronation Street" comes to mind, which has aired almost every weekday since 1960.

Longest running in the WORLD on primetime, I live in Canada and Ive never heard of Detective Conan--prime time only in Japan isnt really in the same league as the Simpsons is it?? Simpsons have a movie out this summer. DOH, Dont have a cow man!!.

Well what year did "Detective Conan" start out? The simpsons started in '87 and may not have as many episodes, but may have been around for longer.
