What are good career paths for a Civil Engineer?

I am set to graduate in May next year and like most 20 year olds have no idea what I want to do in life!

Answer:
Career is not fashion. You don't choose yours by following the prevailing trend. By May next year, I'm assuming you mean you're gonna graduate in May 2015. Don't worry. You have a lot of time to experiment. Try different things. Starting today. Pick up programming. Not working out? Switch to music. Loving it? Narrow it further. Classical or western? Violin or guitar? Too late? No. I know people who started learning classical music after they entered college and by dint of sheer hard work became absolutely amazing singers and are thinking of taking music as their career options. Something will pan out. Don't settle. It's only too late when you find yourself in a job you don't like to sustain a life that you don't really have much of. Keep experimenting. All the best. My two cents. PS: This answer might sound vague. Nevertheless, if you are intrigued, feel free to inbox me. I can explain further.

Join a big multi-national construction firm. Work there for a few years and understand where your strengths lie. Pursue higher education, which allows you to manage or super-specialize. If all goes well, few years down the line, you will be well off.

First of all sit down for a day and plan out what is your area of interest in the civil engineering as, civil engineering being a vast field there are many companies who hire civil engineers. Ex: Chemical Industries, Infrastructure development, Cement industry, Construction companies and many more. start your carrier with some small medium scale companies so that you can get ample of experience, and when you switch to different company you can get handsomely paid with a good position.

I would be graduating this year,in May. And like you,I have things like private jobs or PSUs,or MBA or IAS/IES,etc... Presuming that you do not want to opt for higher studies (otherwise you must have been sure by now),I would suggest you to give time to yourself, actually introspect and find out if there is something that interests you in the field,if you want a job in the core field?... These are the basic ideas I have- 1. If you money is what you want and you don't care whether your career grows up or is stalled, PSU is what you are looking for! Prepare for GATE because PSUs barely do campus recruitment now.(for Civil Engineers) 2. If you want your technical knowledge to be put to test, you want to earn by toiling and learning,go for the private sector. If you don't know yet, Mediocre CTC (about 3.5-5lpa,for trainees) Heavy Workload, about 12hrs,6days a week BUT You can expect something really big after 5-6 years of meaningful experience. You can go on a promotion spree or switch jobs with better packages! You can also take up MBA/M.Tech during your course as an employee, depending whether you want to manage stuff or toil harder on the technicalities section. If you doubt it,here's this for inspiration- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._M._Naik The man behind L&T (I am sure you must be knowing it!)
