When and how did English become the Lingua Franca?

Why do Northern Africans give so much importance to French, while the lingua franca of this age was English?

Because we're stupid, that's why. But younger generations tend more to learn english. Like me. Actually i'd prefer learn chinese (mandarin) than english. But eh....english is way easier.
