Can you practice surfing in a swimming pool?

  • Answer:

As a Grom I would run with my board, full speed, and jump into the condo pool. The idea was to see how far you could make it across...until I kicked out my board into the concrete deck area and dinged it. lol...it was fun for a minute anyways. So the answer is no.

No. First of all, standing on a surfboard floating in a pool is somewhat similar to "Stand Up Paddling", but nothing like surfing. The forward momentum of a surfboard across a wave actually makes it a much more stable platform than a surfboard floating at rest. Also, only a small portion of surfing is actually just "standing up" most of it is paddling out through the breakers, choosing waves, paddling fast enough to catch a wave, THEN POPPING UP. and although the base platform is more stable, it is moving forward at high speeds and requires balance and control adjustments. The, you have to start all over again. Bag the swimming pool idea. Go take some surfing lessons and get into the ocean.

you can practice duck diving and swimming but it will never come that close to being in the ocean. You need to practice in the ocean and be in the ocean as much as you can. You need to know the ocean extremely well if you want to surf.

You can practice to balance, and ask somebody to push you.
