What size surfboard should I buy?

What size surfboard should i buy?

  • I weigh around 190 pounds and am around 5'10''. Does anyone know what size surfboard (and what type) i should get?

  • Answer:

Go to a surf shop and have the guys there help pick you out a board. You can get one new or used. Used baords are always great new boards because you wont have spent a lot of money no a new board that you will ding up. Nobody online can tell you the right kind of board for your skill level or local break, so go to a local shop. They can get you the right board for your weight, skill level, and they know the break better than anyone else here. Dont buy boards online and avoid pop out boards.

At your weight you should get a MINIMUM 9 foot board. With a lot of float. 22-23+ inches wide. Probably longer. I surf with a guy your size and he RIPS on a 10'6. Do NOT be tempted by a short board. They are sexy, sure. All the pros ride them, sure. But most pro surfers are 5'9 140lbs and they've been riding since they could walk. A short board will only steepen the learning curve and having you slaving for years to get the basics down when you could master them in months. You want a board that can float you as you paddle out and provide stability as you get your balance and learn to pop up, stand and ride. If you want to step down once you get competent you can, No problem. But too small a board and you'll just be frustrated, exhausted, and honestly, unhappy. Surfing isn't about vanity, It's about fun! Get a big board that makes your surfing enjoyable to learn and you can work your way down to a kelly slater potato chip board later... if you want to... But so many surfers have been hobbled by a board that is just way too small for them. Go long! Have fun, and stick with it!

+1 to what has already been said, but since your asking your probably newer to the sport like me. If this is true they will probably set you up with a longer board, something easier to learn on, maybe 8' depending on your skill level. If you are really inexperienced though take some lessons. You dont want to buy a board that is good for learning on and then grow out of it in a few months of surfing.

Selecting the right surfboard is part art and part science. Much depends on your size (height and weight), surfing ability, and the size/shape of the waves you ride. To fit the surfer to a surfboard, the shapers vary the surfboard's outline, length, width, thickness, tail, rocker, material, rail, contours, fiberglass, and more to make surfboards that perform superbly for a variety of surfers in a variety of wave conditions. The single most important factor when selecting a surfboard is choosing the correct outline – the curves of the surfboard as viewed from above. Secondly, it's selecting the correct size (length, width and thickness) to ensure the proper float. The rocker, tail, bottom profile, rail, etc are secondary considerations that are best left to the shapers' discretion and experience for all but the best surfers. The surfboards listed on our site are made by some of the world's best shapers. They have carefully crafted their designs to reflect their years of experience and feedback from countless surfers. If you're not sure exactly what you want, trust the shapers and their designs. They are the best in the business. http://www.surfboardsetc.com/index.html Regards, Surfboards Etc Customer Service www.SurfboardsEtc.com

I would get a 6 to 7 foot board. I'm 5'9'' and mine is 6 foot. As for what type, well thats really just preference. I'd go to a surf shop and have them help you out though.

it really does depend on your skill level and balance if your just starting out then you should get a bigger board that will definitely float you (eg 7ft 9 mini mal) simply because you dont want to be starting out on a board that you cant catch waves on or just cant stand on
