I would say a soft top 7' to 8 1/2'. Thats how I taught my mom how to surf. (my dad would get too frustrated =]) its the perfect size, not too long, and good even on 4-5 foot days.

yup get a soft top for a begginer but mke sure its a long board like 9 foot

for beginners, the bigger the better. get the 10' and when you get better you can ride with friend on it or dog if that's your style.

tha 9. Nothing wrong with using a foam at first. Another thought is to start like I did on a boogie board. Get used to wave selection and get around in the line-up, then buy a full fleged glass board. I still like to ride the boogie 25 years later. (of course I had to buy a fat boy model)

well it actually kind of depends if you are not planning on doing tricks you just pretty much love to ride i would go with a long board maybe like 8ft. but if you wold like to do tricks i would go with a short board. maybe like a 5ft or something small like that it depends also how tall you are. i started off with a shortboard its hard at first but once you really get into surfing you will be happy you started with a shortboard.

Generally, the longer the board has the more volume it has and so the more stable it will be as you learn to stand up on it and ride waves. If you are quite small and light (say 5ft and 6/7 stone) then you might be alright with a small one, if the longer one is a bit of a pain to carry around. But longer is always easier! Good luck x
