A giftcard or a voucher for a store he likes that sells decent outdoors gear. That way he can get something he really needs or wants. You admit yourself that you don't know much about climbing so its better to let him, the expert, decide. Hope this helps!

do not buy him climbing equipment unless he asks for something specific. climbing equipment cannot be returned unless it is non load bearing, like shoes or chalkbag, etc. i would purchase something that keeps off the elements. i know plenty of outdoor enthusiasts that lack a pillow actually. a small pillow for his sleeping bag might be a good gift he never thought he needed and it won't cost you the farm.

Tough to buy a climber a climbing gift cuz the gear is so particular and climbers tend to be very opinionated about their gear! If he is going near one of the big canadian cities where there is a Mountain Equipment Co-op, just get him a gift cert. If not, just tell him his 2 weeks away is the gift! Seriously!

Many years ago my long-time boyfriend was leaving for a month-long climbing expedition so I gave him a gift certificate for his favorite gear shop but I tucked it in a little present I made him. I bought a small piece of Polar fleece and sewed up a little "willy warmer" (not to get too graphic, but imagine a slipcover for a zucchini). I added a card saying this was to keep him warm when I couldn't be there. One of the most famous mountaineering gear companies is Patagonia -- I told him this was "Patagonad." He got a huge kick out of it -- even showed it to his climbing buddies. He told me he ended up using it as a storage sack for his cell phone in his pack but he said it made him smile and remember me every time he looked at it on the trip. :-)

I love it when I get given food to take - outdoors stores sell food that is meant to be specially suited to mountaineers/climbers, i.e. they are super-densely packed with all sorts of nutrients. how about some of these? sure they won't last forever (he will eat them) but then again he probably Has all the actual gear he needs!
