Rock climbing gloves in an indoor gym?

  • Hey I've been climbing in an indoor gym for about 5 months now, and when I was in the sport shop today, I saw some rock climbing gloves. I was wondering what they are for, and ...show more

I've seen that sort at REI. It is specialty gear for fashion statements. If the manufacturer can sell a ton or two then I'd expect 2011 would have it in hot pink for ladies. I use leather construction gloves for speleology belay, climbing, and static rope techniques.

Use of gloves in climbing can be a bit controversial. Many consider it aid climbing. On the other hand most climbers don't have a problem taping up their wrists and hands when they want to do some serious crack climbing. I've done this consistently myself and it makes a big difference in how bad you tear up your skin. Some time ago I bought and have used Spider Mits which take's the place of tape. I can put them on in about one minute and don't have to use tape. I admit to having been accused of cheating when I'm doing that crack climb when I use them. Guess it all depends on your point of view.

i've only ever seen gloves worn while belaying. i'd assume the gloves you saw would be quite thin(otherwise how would you climb in them) but i still think i'd be more comfortable with just bare hands. i guess people would use them if their skin gets raw pretty quickly but if you climb enough your skin shuold get tough enough for you to climb without gloves
